Start with the job: coverage without babysitting

A useful robot needs to locate itself, divide space into sensible passes, return to its dock, and resume after charging. The key question is not which sensor sounds newest. It is whether the whole navigation stack works in your lighting, layout, and floor plan.

  • Ask whether mapping works in darkness if you schedule overnight.
  • Check whether each floor can keep its own map without moving the dock.
  • Look for room, zone, no-go, and no-mop controls—not merely “mapping.”
  • Verify what happens after furniture moves or a door is closed.

LiDAR: fast geometry, visible turret

A laser scanner can build room geometry quickly and usually does not need room light. A raised turret can add height, which matters under low furniture. “LiDAR” alone says little about object recognition near the floor.

Camera and structured-light systems

Front-facing optical systems can add object classification or navigation cues. Performance may change with lighting, glare, dark surfaces, and firmware. A camera also changes the privacy conversation even if images are processed locally.

  • Find the manufacturer’s statement on local versus cloud processing.
  • Check whether image capture or remote viewing is optional.
  • Look for a physical or in-app camera disable control if that matters to you.

Map features worth paying for

Room naming, split/merge tools, repeat passes, cleaning order, carpet rules, and editable no-go zones are practical. Decorative 3D maps are less important than being able to fix a bad room boundary in seconds.

Mapping failure modes

Mirrors to floor level, glass doors, black surfaces, tight chair forests, moved docks, and doors that change position can confuse different systems. Buy from a seller with a workable return window because your floor plan is part of the test.
